Men’s Baseball Team Loses Close Game with Hillsborough College, Sweeps Palm Beach State to Keep Conference Race Tight
PHSC looks to build on the progress made last week by their performances against Hillsborough College and Palm Beach State College as the conference race heats up.
On April 7, the Bobcats took on FCSAA DI Hillsborough College (24-22) in their last matchup of the regular season. PHSC faced a challenge early as the Hawks scored 18 unanswered runs in the first inning. Despite the 18-0 deficit, key pieces of hitting from Vance Celiberti (HR), Michael Greenberg (HR) and Sebastian Berrios (6 RBIs), produced a near-comeback for PHSC. However, the team fell short and lost 20-18.
On April 10, PHSC kicked off a three-game series at WREC Park. The Bobcats competed with Palm Beach State College (25-18). PHSC were victorious with a 11-0 shutout win. Starting pitcher Gavin Zassenbraker brought a powerhouse performance on the mound, allowing just one hit. Meanwhile, the offense continued to display their strength with key hits from Vance Celiberti (RBI, Sacrifice Fly) and Sebastian Berrios (Two-run HR) as prime examples during the contest.
Zassenbraker expressed appreciation for his teammates’ performance after the game, stating, “The energy was there from me and the rest of the team. All nine guys showed up and were ready to play and I feel that it’s not just about my performance on the mound, but the intensity these guys flip on when it’s time to go. It just goes to show that if you give our hitters some support defensively, they’re going to get you ahead and keep putting pressure on the other team.”
On April 11, the Bobcats would wrap up the series with a home doubleheader. In Game 1, PHSC won 12-5. In Game 2, PHSC achieved the complete sweep with a 6-5 victory.
The Bobcats currently sit 15-9 in conference and 27-18 overall record entering this week. PHSC is tied with Lake-Sumter State College for the first-place position in the DII Sun-Lakes Conference. Check the schedule to see upcoming games.
