Athletics Director - Steve Winterling

Steve Winterling moved into the role of full-time athletic director in 2018-2019 after 27 years as head baseball coach. Now, he oversees the successful athletic program in which three programs completed at district and national competitions in 2018-19.

After completing his 27th year as the head coach at Pasco-Hernando State College in 2018, Steve Winterling led PHSC to an overall record of 36-18. With an overall coaching record of 705-601-4, he earned his 700th win against Florida Southern JV on April 9, 2018. His record at PHSC is 688-581-4. In 2014, Pasco-Hernando State College made a first-ever trip to the NJCAA Division II College World Series and fourth place finish. The team advanced to the series in Enid, Oklahoma after winning the Southeast District Regional Tournament in Morehead City, North Carolina. He was also recognized as Regional Coach of the Year by the National Junior College Athletic Association and American Baseball Coaches Association.

Winterling started PHSC’s first intercollegiate baseball team in March 1991. Prior, he served as an assistant coach at Florida State University for six years under Mike Martin. His tenure included three College World Series in Omaha, including a national runner-up finish in 1986. He coached several professional athletes at FSU that included Deion Sanders, Paul Sorrento, Luis Alicea and Eduardo Perez. Winterling also was the head coach at Florida College for one season in 1982, after serving as the assistant coach from 1979-81. It was at Florida College where he coached former big leaguer and now Tampa Bay Rays announcer Orestes Destrade.

In just three short seasons, Winterling took PHSC to the first FCCAA State Tournament in 1994, where they finished state runner-up. In 1995, the program won the Suncoast Conference and made its second appearance in the state tournament. The team made its third state tournament appearance in 1997. One of his best teams was in 1998, when the team finished 31-12 and led the state with .361 team batting average. His teams appeared in the Suncoast Conference tournament six times (1997, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2010). His 2009 team set a school record with 37 wins. Since moving to Division II in 2011, PHSC has appeared in the NJCAA Division II District Tournament eight out of the last nine years. As a promoter of community college baseball, Winterling started PHSC’s first baseball web page and the first online FCCAA State Scoreboard in 2001. He also served as the Florida Community College Activities Association Statistics Coordinator from 2004-2006. In 2010, the baseball team received the Florida Collegiate Umpires Sportsmanship Award for the Suncoast Conference.

Winterling built the PHSC program by recruiting quality student-athletes to play against top competition throughout the state of Florida. Over 30 players have signed professional contracts and many others have gone on to outstanding four-year institutions.

Winterling is an avid runner and promotes the importance of staying active and living a healthy lifestyle to all students. He has completed seven marathons and 46 half-marathons. In 2016, he was named FCSAA State Chair for cross country 2016 and has served as a NJCAA DI cross country pollster for the past two years. This fall he will take on additional duties as the coordinator for the Atlantic Division.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Winterling played two years of baseball at Florida College before moving on to the University of South Florida, where he received his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1981. He completed his master’s degree from Florida State University in 1986. He has been a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association for 41 year.
